My third girlfriend, and my last.
There’s something I’ve always said: a crazy bitch is fine — a fucking bitch, never.
Miyoung’s a crazy bitch.
That’s exactly why I like her.
Miyoung was a web designer, working a contract job, decent salary, at the SK Tower in Jongno.
One day I called her and said I was heading out to Yangpyeong that day to see my mom and dad — and she said she was coming too.
Why?
Why not?
No, I mean, why would you come to my parents’ house?
What’s weird about a friend visiting a friend’s house?
Hmm…
I thought about it and had nothing to say back.
I called my mom.
Mom, I’m coming today.
Okay, drive safe.
Yeah, and I’m bringing a friend.
Oh, who?
Bongguk?
No, someone else.
Who?
I said, someone else.
I hung up.
I went to Jongno around when Miyoung’s workday ended, met up with her, and we got on the subway toward Yangpyeong.
We got off at Guksu Station, and to my surprise, my older sister was there waiting to pick us up.
We drove together and pulled into the yard at my mom’s place, and there were my older sister, Moonhee, my mom and dad, my brothers-in-law, my nieces and nephews — everyone had gathered.
My mom had figured it out.
Damn it.
She’d spread the word that I was bringing a girl, and everyone had come all the way out to Yangpyeong to gawk.
I could’ve died.
A few days later, Miyoung’s parents called my mom’s place in Yangpyeong, saying something like,
“our daughter had no manners at all, going all the way out there empty-handed,”
and sent a huge box of abalone, crab, and premium Korean beef out to Yangpyeong as a gift.
And then they wanted to meet.
While I had absolutely no idea how or why any of this was spiraling the way it was, my brother-in-law announced he knew a good Japanese restaurant in Samseong-dong and just went ahead and booked it as the spot for the formal parents’ meeting.
I got some genuinely good sushi out of it by sheer accident, so no complaints there, but I had absolutely no idea how I was supposed to calm any of these people down.
That fall, Miyoung went ahead and booked a wedding hall.
Said dragging things out never ends well, let’s just knock it out fast — lured me out with
“let’s go get free food at a wedding buffet,”
took me to Cheonggiwa Wedding Hall, and signed the contract right there on the spot.
Around September we found a place and moved in as newlyweds-to-be.
Without telling me, she took my official seal, went down to the district office, and finished filing the marriage registration herself.
Yeah, she’s crazy.
No question about it.
And yet somehow I couldn’t put up any resistance and just kept getting dragged along — but I liked it, so I couldn’t say no.
Can’t really explain it beyond that.
The night before the wedding, me, Miyoung, Hyeonbeom, and Yeonkyung were having drinks at our place.
A call came in for me, and Yeonkyung picked it up.
“Hello? Who is this? You want to talk to Lee Donghoon?”
Miyoung asked Yeonkyung,
“Who is it?”
“Says her name is Nam Giyoon.”
“Who?”
“Nam Giyoon. She wants Lee Donghoon.”
Miyoung got up and took the phone.
“Who is this?”
“It’s Nam Giyoon. Put Lee Donghoon on.”
I’m screwed!
